  8. Once upon a time there was a real Prince Amleth whose father, the 
  9. king of Jutland, was murdered by King Fengo, his brother . . . The 
  10. story was told in the thirteenth century by a Danish historian, Saxo 
  11. Grammaticus. It was retold in the sixteenth century, with additions, 
  12. by Belleforest, a Frenchman. His version, translated into English, was 
  13. probably the source for ShakespeareÆs tragedy.
  14.     There was an earlier play, perhaps written by Thomas Kyd, 
  15. which might have linked ShakespeareÆs Hamlet with BelleforestÆs 
  16. Histoire Tragique of Hamblet. But this link is now missing ù the 
  17. play was never published.
