- HAMLET PRINCE OF DENMARK
-
- Source
-
- Once upon a time there was a real Prince Amleth whose father, the
- king of Jutland, was murdered by King Fengo, his brother . . . The
- story was told in the thirteenth century by a Danish historian, Saxo
- Grammaticus. It was retold in the sixteenth century, with additions,
- by Belleforest, a Frenchman. His version, translated into English, was
- probably the source for ShakespeareÆs tragedy.
- There was an earlier play, perhaps written by Thomas Kyd,
- which might have linked ShakespeareÆs Hamlet with BelleforestÆs
- Histoire Tragique of Hamblet. But this link is now missing ù the
- play was never published.
